Corn row orientation #869844

Asked May 23, 2024, 7:02 PM EDT

Hello, I have a backyard garden with a section of about 9' x 15' in which I'm planning to plant popcorn. Will it matter, especially pertaining to pollination, if I plant 4 rows of about 15' long; or 8 rows of about 9' long? In other words, will it matter if I plant the rows the "long way" or the "short way"? Thank you so much for your help and time.

Good morning,

Thank you for your quick reply and the link.  However, I didn't see the answer to my question there.

Could Maureen or someone else there try to answer it, please?

Thank you so much.

Good Morning Ron,

The information in the links that I included discussed pollination of the popcorn. I am not sure you will find a specific answer to your question.

The information states:

Always plant corn in blocks of at least four rows. Corn planted in a single row will have much of its pollen blown out of the row, and probably produce ears that have blank areas where kernels did not form.

Since the corn is wind pollinated, I would suggest you plant the rows based on the prevailing winds here. The wind is usually from the south or west. Based on the layout and direction of your plot, I would plant the rows facing west or south to catch the winds for the balance of your rows. The first row will catch the wind and pollinate the remaining rows.

Good Luck!
