Blister beetle #869788

Asked May 23, 2024, 1:16 PM EDT

Each July for a few years, my tall anemone are invaded overnight with gray blister beetles. They eat all the leaves and leave the flower stem. Last year I sprayed during July with an insecticide and thought I had won the battle. But I quit too soon and there they came again. What can I do to prevent this? I have mulch. Are they in the mulch?

Hi Sherry,

Thanks for reaching out with your question about blister beetles, and I'm sorry to hear they're eating your anemones. Blister beetle larvae usually feed on grasshopper eggs found in the soil so they're most likely emerging from you soil especially if you had a large concentration of grasshoppers last year. The adults usually appear in mid-May and can rapidly defoliate plants. Often they move on quickly so not many controls are effective for them. Do you find that they stick around your garden for longer than a few days?

I found two main control suggestions. The first is to pick the blister beetles off the plants by hand. If you do this method, you should wear gloves as they can release a chemical that irritates skin when they are picked up. This resource from the Kansas State University Extension recommends the following: stomach insecticides such as cyfluthrin (BioAdvanced Vegetable & Garden Insect Spray), permethrin (Bonide Eight Vegetable, Fruit and Flower Concentrate and Hi-Yield Garden and Farm Insect Control) and gamma-cyhalothrin (Spectracide Triazicide) as effective controls.

Thanks and happy gardening!
