Hello, I live in Avon, Ohio. When is the best time for granular grub preventative application? Multiple times a year? Which chemical is most effective, at what time of year? (imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin or chlorantraniloprole).

This year may be different than other years. Seems everything is out of wack. What i have used over the years, and very successful i might add, is imidacloprid and i apply it at the end of June or early July. I do this yearly. Mow the lawn, apply and water it in. In the last few years i have timed it with rainfall. My neighbors struggle with grubs and wonder how i do it. I only apply once a year. Like i said this year may be different. I am waiting for more advice from the OSU experts. Thanks for the question.
I have read that some lawn insecticides may hamper or hinder the absorption of grub preventatives into the lawn. Which insecticides can I use in concert with grub preventatives?
not sure why you would want to use a lawn insecticide. What i mentioned covers more than grubs. It is all i use unless we have a fall attack of army worms/
i have also noticed a lot of ants everywhere. Near the home i am using an ant spray to keep them out. You have to determine if the ants are causing damage. Hopefully , as the season progresses, these events will settle down.
Thank you for all the great information. I have a 1-acre lawn. Do you recommend to apply imidacloprid as liquid or granular ? Where is a good place to buy in Lorain County?
I have used it once a year at the end of June. This year is so different but i still plan to use at the end of June. I use granular. Its your choice. I do not know Lorain County. I guess i would check the box stores and various gardening stores. good luck
Thanks for all the useful info on imidacloprid. Since it's about time to apply it and my yard is dried out and brown, do I still apply it? Or wait? I have a acre of grass, so it would be extremely hard to water the entire yard to satisfy the watering needs of the imidacloprid granules. (or is it?)
I have been telling my friends, do not mow the lawn during these hot days but they do not believe me and now they like yellow lawns. We had big storm the other night that dropped 3 inches of rain and part of my tree. If you got the rain you should be good. If you did not the water you apply will probably run off. I am going to plan to put my chemical down when there is a good forecast for rain. So far that has worked the last 3 years. Otherwise i tend to put down in sections and water that section in. If you have pets that works because you can put it down. water in, and let it dry. Pets then use it. It has been an unusual year. I plan to wait until second week of July if we do not have rain. Then i will apply in sections. Hope this helps. Also i hope you got some of the rain we had. More expected today. By the way, if the water does not soak in you may have to soften up the ground with water and then water it in. Who said gardening was easy.
Thank you for the quick reply. I always mow my lawn at the highest setting. I have not mowed my lawn in a few week (before this drought started). We have had almost NO rain in quote a while.
I will wait until we finally get a good rain forecast or put down the imidacloprid during the 2nd week of July in sections and water with a sprinkler.
