Good Morning Diane,
Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.
Are you planning to plant the new tree in exactly the same spot? Or a few feet away? It appears you had the stump ground out. Did you fill the hole with the ground wood or did you replace the hole with fresh soil? These would all make a difference in how the new tree would survive.
Here is a link from the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website about tree selection: https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/trees-and-shrubs This includes a database of trees and shrubs to consider.
I would suggest planting the new tree at least a few feet away from the old stump hole. You might need to chop through some old roots to dig an adequate hole for the new tree. It will take several years for the old roots to decompose.
You could consider planting a pollinator garden over the old stump hole: https://extension.umn.edu/lawns-and-landscapes/flowers-pollinators
Our pollinators are disappearing at an alarming rate. Everyone needs to help!
Good Luck!
