Possible dog strangling vine? #869752
Asked May 23, 2024, 10:52 AM EDT
Hello! We live in the Hill Section of Burlington and have been advised to be on the lookout for dog-strangling vine. We had some on our property last year and we're wondering if these plants are also dog-strangling vine in a less mature stage of growth.
Thank you!

Hello Elizabeth,
Thank you for contacting the Master Gardener Help Line, and thank you for your clear pictures. First, my colleague on the Help Line, Virginia, noticed your post and said she also lives in the Hill section and has been dealing with this invasive. I'll give you her quote. "Pale swallowort is an invasive and I try to pull out as much as possible, but it is very hard to control because my neighbor has a LOT of it. I either wait until after rain and pull it out by hand or use a weed-whacker to cut it off and prevent it from going to seed.
The question is whether the photo is an immature stage of pale swallowort, and the answer is yes. The mature stage has pink flowers that turn into pods with seeds that you can see in this article." https://extension.org/search_gcse/#gsc.tab=1&gsc.q=dog%20strangling%20vine
I hope you find this helpful.

Also, I attached a couple other articles that give some suggestions as to management. That said, it's very difficult to manage but using some of the steps described you may be able to achieve some control.

Again, thank you for contacting us and for being willing to do your part in controlling this invasive.

Thank you! I appreciate the help. We'll do our best with the dog-strangling vine! We've also got a very nice plantation of goutweed that we keep battling...it never ends. But my husband is on a mission. He takes the presence of these weeds as well as Norway Maples personally. :)
Best,
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth:
Glad to see that Dan and Virginia were able to help you out with the vine issue.
For the Goutweed and Norway Maples, here is a link to the VT Invasives website that provides info. on both of these invasives -
