What’s wrong with my montmorency cherry tree? #869746

Asked May 23, 2024, 10:36 AM EDT

I need help identifying what’s wrong with my young montmorency cherry tree. It looked perfect a couple days ago! It seems to affect mostly the new leaves. Also, I’d appreciate knowing what the best thing is to try to help it, without harming too many bugs

Hi,

This looks like a common symptom to cherry species called Shot Hole Disease. Usually this is not a lethal issue as long as the tree is healthy otherwise. On the link it does mention treatment with a fungicide but this typically needs to happen before the symptoms begin. You can refer to our Stone fruits page for reference on treating various Cherry tree symptoms and also just to be on the look out for anything else.

Virginia Tech has a Home Fruit Spray Schedule you can reference for recommendations on different sprays and when. There are organic options which can be less harmful to insects and beneficials if not used in abundance.
