Caterpillars, invasives and native substitutes #869728

Asked May 23, 2024, 9:16 AM EDT

Hello New to gardening and new to the county. We have a home in Dutchess and I’d like some advice on how to approach the caterpillars, certain invasives (garlic mustard, gooseneck loosestrife) and what we can use as a native groundcover. I look forward to your suggestions

Welcome to Dutchess County and the world of Gardening

In general Caterpillars can be  helpful . However this year we are seeing many, many of the Invasive Spongy Moth caterpillars. Most health trees will recover. There are some Control options. Squishing the caterpillars and moth and destroying the egg masses when they appear. Using Traps can be helpful including the sticky/barrier bands.

The Garlic Mustard can be bothersome. Manual removal can be helpful. Making sure you pull at least the upper half of the root and pulling before seeds form. Note can take up to 5 years to be completely effective.

The Gooseneck Loosestife is best controlled by digging up the new shoots when you see them.
