Hello, we live in Olmsted Falls, Ohio. Are you able to advise re whether it's too late to plant sugar snap peas from seeds? I just read I should have planted them in March. Appreciate your help - thank you!

Expert Response

Hello Katherine.

Thank you for your question.

Snap peas are an early spring crop.

They are directly planted in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked, about four to six weeks before the average last frost date in your area.

But don’t wait too long to plant your peas, because they don’t do well in hot weather.

However, there is still a chance to plant them yet this year.

In a cooler climate, you can also plant snap peas in the late summer or early fall, about eight weeks before the average first frost date in your area.

For fall planting, choose a variety that matures early.

Thank you so much, Shelley, this is so helpful. Think I will aim for planting in the ground end of summer, given the cautions regarding heat.   Just a follow up question...I purchased Sugar Daddy Snap seeds...they mature in 65 days.  Think these will be ok if I plant them toward the end of August?

thanks again,
Cathy

You're welcome Catheryn. The rule of thumb is to plant 6 - 8 weeks before the first frost - so the very end of August/beginning of September would work in Ohio.
