Spotted lantern flies on grape vine #869615
Asked May 22, 2024, 12:54 PM EDT
There are 2 issues with our grape vines in the garden. The leaves have little puckers on one side and a grayish residue on the back side. What is it? How can we treat it?
Secondly, there is an infestation of baby spotted lantern flies. What do we do about that?

Hi Michelle,
The puckers and fuzzy patches on the leaves of your vine are evidence of relatively harmless grape mites (Eriophyes vitis). They are considered more of a cosmetic issue than a danger to your grape vines and can be controlled by removing affected leaves as soon as their presence is detected. You can read more about this family of mites and management in this Cornell Extension Bulletin.
The young lanternflies are a greater threat to the grape vine. While these insects have attracted enormous attention in our state, they do relatively little serious damage to most plants. Grape vines are one of the exceptions where they can severely impact the health of this plant which they favor in their attentions. This excellent article from PennState Extension presents the most current knowledge on spotted lanternfly damage, monitoring and management for vineyard crops. Their research suggests that a grape vine can survive a minor spotted lanternfly infestation though it is clear that heavy infestations, especially in successive years, can rob a grape vine of nutrients to the point of killing it. There is additional information and a list of resources available from Cornell Extension here.
