fast growing grassy weed #869613

Asked May 22, 2024, 12:52 PM EDT

Hello I have a grassy weed in my yard, and I'm having a hard time identifying it. I initially thought it was Nutsedge, but I'm not so sure. It grows much faster than other grass, and it's lighter colored. I've attached a picture for you. It has not spread rapidly through my lawn, but it does expand by maybe a foot annually.

Expert Response

Hi Don,

Yes, this is a grass, based on what I can see in your photo I think that it is Quackgrass.

(Elytrigia repens). This is a weedy species that can be brought in with soil or wind-blown seed.  Unfortunately, there's not herbicide that will kill just the quackgrass and leave the lawn alone.  You can either live with it (and mow more often) or spray the quackgrass with a non-selective herbicide like glyphosate and repair the damage to the lawn by reseeding or re-sodding.  You can try to kill the quackgrass by digging or pulling, too, but because it has underground stems that can regenerate new leaves easily, it will take a long-term concerted effort.

I hope this is helpful!

Cordially,

John
