Expert Response

Hello,

thank you for contacting Ask Extension. It does appear to be tobacco rattle virus. For an exact analysis, you should contact your MSU office in Kalamazoo. They are open from 8-12 and 1-4:30 M-TH. Friday by appointments. And will be closed on May 27th. You can call them at <personal data hidden>.

Unfortunately, once a plant has become infected with the tobacco rattle virus (TRV), it cannot be treated or cured. The best course of action is to remove the infected plant and dispose of it properly. You can dispose of the plant by burning, burying, or composting it. To prevent the spread of TRV, it's important to clean your pruning tools and other equipment thoroughly between uses. Use a solution that combines 1% sodium lauryl sulfate and 1% Alconox to clean your tools. Additionally, inspecting plants for symptoms of TRV before purchase and avoiding the purchase of symptomatic plants can help prevent the problem in the future.
