Grass clumps #869607

Asked May 22, 2024, 12:29 PM EDT

Last fall and summer my yard was ravaged by two golden retrievers. Mud yard. I know fall is the best time to repair but all summer with a mud yard just wouldn't work. I aerated and slit seeded a few weeks ago with Kentucky Blue Grass. I know it takes a long time to germinate and it is finally coming up in hair like sprouts. I seeded last winter hoping some of it would germinate in the spring. I have a lot of clumps that are tennis ball to softball sized in bare spots. Is this a weed or clumps of KBG? I have enclosed pictures. The roots have a longer solid root in spots which leads me to believe it is KBG. Is that what it is or do i pull them out as weeds. Thank you for your help.

2006, 2007 is annual bluegrass, a weed, https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/grass-sedge-rush/annual-bluegrass
It spreads easily.  Like most weeds it is fertilized by lawn fertilizers.  Clumps like this produce hundreds of seeds.  It should be manually removed because all herbicides against this will kill grass.
2005 is mostly Kentucky blue grass although there is a weed in it.
Kentucky Bluegrass is a difficult grass to sustain.

I would suggest a 50/50 mixture of fescues and bluegrass.  The grasses will tell you which fits best where. https://extension.umn.edu/lawns-and-landscapes/planting-and-maintaining-fine-fescue-lawn
