Ilex vomitoria in Douglas County #869591

Asked May 22, 2024, 10:36 AM EDT

I have a question about Ilex vomitoria, commonly known as yaupon and if any variety of this species can be grown in Douglas County, Oregon (9a, 1990).

Has this plant been studied for cultivation in Oregon?

Thanks

Hey Brent,

I don't know of Oregon-based research about this species specifically, but there have been successful Holly-plantings in the area before.

Yaupon is a Southern Native and may have some issues growing in Oregon. The University of Arkansas: https://www.uaex.uada.edu/yard-garden/resource-library/plant-week/yaupon-holly-2-26-10.aspx says that the plant is hardy through zone 10, but smaller, dwarfing varieties of the species may not tolerate the cold well.
