English Ivy-proof fence? #869564

Asked May 22, 2024, 6:51 AM EDT

Currently, I share what once was a ‘good neighbor’ fence with a side and rear neighbor - and it’s in desperate need of replacing. Unfortunately, it is overcome with English Ivy. We’ve been here 4 years this summer and have never managed to control the Ivy as it comes from both the rear and side neighbor yard (not sure where it began). My question is this: is there a fence material (composite, vinyl, etc) that would be resistant to the Ivy climb, or not allow it to get its grips in? I seek longevity in the fence and a desperate attempt at preventing the re-spread once the fence is replaced. Thank you!

Thank you for your question, Cassandra.  I am afraid that OSU has no research on this topic.  A brief look at web resources indicates that some companies advertise products that perform this function, but I can find no scientific evidence sustaining that.  This is the best I can find:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/techniques/ivy-removal-home-landscape

Good luck!
