Hi, we have what we believe to be a choke cherry tree with an ailment we noticed a few weeks ago. Are you able to identify what the issue is with the tree and what the treatment might be?

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for your question. This actually looks like an older injury. The cracks in the trunk are frost cracks from temperature swings during the winter months. These do not look very deep.
It looks like something is rubbing on the bark? These are also superficial wounds. Trees can shrink/swell during winter and early spring. My best advice would be to keep the tree adequately watered year-round, including in fall and winter. Avoid additional stress. Make good pruning cuts if necessary.

Thanks so much for Alison. We feel much better now knowing it's an older injury (it's my wife's favorite tree).
Best,
Ryan
