What tree is this and should I cut it down? #869523
Asked May 21, 2024, 6:47 PM EDT
I have this tree growing in my front flower bed. It started growing maybe about a year ago and has grown pretty rapidly. The leaves fall off in the winter. I haven't found anything identical in the neighborhood although it looks similar to Chinese Pistache in the leaf structure.
I'd like to know what tree this is and whether I should let it grow or cut it off. It does add a different look to the flower bed, although it is keeping some other smaller shrubs in the shade. This is in McKinney, TX, in Collin County, just north of 121.
Thanks!

Vin,
Thanks for your inquiry. Looking at your pictures, I have narrowed down the tree to Walnut, Sumac, or Tree of Heaven. The fact that it has grown very rapidly pretty much eliminates Walnut. Tree of Heaven would be my best guess as it is a very rapid grower. It is also what many people call a trash tree. You might do more research online.
Whether you should cut down this tree is your choice. It would depend on many factors that I cannot assess without seeing your complete landscape.
