How to safely eliminate stinky bob and other non-native geraniums from a pasture. #869506

Asked May 21, 2024, 5:17 PM EDT

Good afternoon. We have 7 acres in the Macleay area east of Salem that are mixed pasture with white oak and douglas fir. In the tree-shaded areas we have a heavy infestation of stinky bob (Herb Robert) along with other non-native geranium species. We do have a small herd of cattle and would like to improve the pastures by eliminating the non-native geranium species and seeding with pasture grass and other natives. We also have thistle and tansy ragwort, but I've eliminated enough of that the past 4 years I can walk the acreage and physically remove most of these before they flower (leaving the tansy that has the cinnabar moth caterpillars). I can't simply mow the pastures as the hills are simply too steep to allow safe mowing. Any assistance/recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Yes please; the best of safest and most efficient if possible.

Hi Jay,
Here is what the PNW Weed Management Handbook recommends for treating Geranium, shiny (Geranium lucidum) and herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) -
https://pnwhandbooks.org/weed/problem-weeds/geranium-shiny-geranium-lucidum-herb-robert-geranium-robertianum. All except glufosinate are registered for use in pastures in Oregon.  If you follow the label directions properly, they are safe to use.
