ant hills in lawn #869479

Asked May 21, 2024, 2:40 PM EDT

We have numerous ant hills in our lawn and in my flower beds. What can we do to get rid of them without harming our grass or my flowers and shrubs?

Wake County North Carolina

Expert Response

I recommend you use an ant bait to destroy the colonies.  Especially if you have fire ants, you will create multiple other colonies if you disrupt an original mound.  See https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/red-imported-fire-ant-in-north-carolina for recommendations on controlling fire (and other) ants.  Note that because there is an oil in ant baits, if it is old, the oil will be rancid and the ants will not take it.
