Knotweed #869446

Asked May 21, 2024, 12:25 PM EDT

Hello, I was wondering if you had anyone that could help me, or maybe lead me in the right direction. My daughter just bought a house right in the city of Milaca. After the snow melted, we saw weird looking growth very close to her house/garage, along her fenceline and in her neighbors yard and when we googled them they appear to be some sort of knotweed. Was wondering if you knew anyone that could help us confirm and identify this plant and even help us get rid of it.

Mille Lacs County Minnesota

Expert Response

Bummer! Japanese Knotweed is a big problem in Minnesota and other states. You do not want to mow it or cut it but you do want to stop it from spreading by seed. Cutting it can increase the root rhyzome and cause it to spread more.

Control is usually with herbicides. You can contact your local county extension office through the link below under prevention and management.
