Recent homeowners. At time of purchase the attached plants were located in one section of the backyard. Over the last 2 summers they have spread to take over grass and garden beds. Tried digging up but root system seems to be connected. Are you able to identify based on pictures and potentially advice on how to remove?

Expert Response

I believe your plant is Wild Ginger.  It is often used as a ground cover but, as you have found, it will spread via underground rhizones.  You should be able to kill it with a broadleaf weed killer.  https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/canadian-wild-ginger
