I RECENTLEY FOUND A HOLE IN A FLOWERING CRAB THAT THAT I HAVE HAD FOR OVER 30 YEARS, THE HOLE IS APPROXIMATELY 1 1/4" WIDE AND 3 1/2" DEEP. THE ONLY ANIMAL OR BIRD THAT I HAVE SEEN AROUND IT WAS SOME SMALL FINCH THAT WAS LOOKING AT IT, i DON'T KNOW IF IT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH MAKING IT ALTHOUGH THERE WERE SOME SMALL SHAVINGS INSIDE. MY QUESTION IS WHAT DO I DO ABOUT IT? WILL IT BE HARMED? THANK YOU FOR THE HELP.

Expert Response
There isn’t anything that can be done to treat it. Trees have to heal from the inside. Trees can survive a lot of damage. It also looks like a woodpecker hole because it is so round and neatly made.
Dear Evelyn,
Thank you for your reply to my question however I do have another question. Should some type of screen be put over the hole to keep some type of bird from nesting or insects from causing further damage?
Thanks Again
Mike

Birds excavate rotted wood and insects can find their way in through cracks so screening the hole won’t make any difference and attaching it might cause more damage.
