Coddling moth killer #869415

Asked May 21, 2024, 10:08 AM EDT

My brother who has 10 acres of apples says he has had average to good results with a vinegar and sugar mixture to attract and drown moths. Does Extension have any info or experience with this?

Hello. I have not heard of this method... is it for codling moth control? These guys are tough to control without insecticides, but trapping for them will let you know if you indeed have them. Codling moth traps are available at Great Lakes IPM (https://www.greatlakesipm.com/).

I have a small orchard at home, and I have codling moths problems every year. They bore into the fruit, and then the larvae eat the fruit from the inside. There is an organic option called codling moth virus, which is effective but works slowly. https://www.groworganic.com/blogs/articles/naturally-occurring-codling-moth-virus

We also have a codling moth model on the MSU Enviroweather system, and I would recommend taking a look at it to know 'when' to make applications for control.https://enviroweather.msu.edu/crops/apple/codlingmoth

Here is another good article for control options: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/codling-moth-management-options-for-michigan-apples

Let me know if you need more help.
