I have a serious infestation of asparagus beetles in my patch. Should I remove all of the rotting leaves now and replace it with straw since I read that rotting leaves encourages the bugs? If the infestation is really bad should I dig up my entire patch and start over next y to ear? My patch is about 5 years old now. I have never seen anything like this before and am greatly distressed about it. Did I do anything to encourage these beetles?
Thank you kindly.

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.
First of all I’d get rid of all of the cover from the asparagus. The beetles over winter in protected areas.
There is a great article on the University website. Go to extension.umn.edu and search for asparagus beetle. The article gives descriptions and ways to get rid of them.
I think by leaving the patch covered is encouraging them.
Good luck! I hope the article helps.
