Grasshoppers and new trees #869399

Asked May 21, 2024, 8:46 AM EDT

We recently picked up and planted a lot of chokecherries from the conservation office in Simla. Now I see a lot of very tiny grasshoppers. Will they eat the trees (around 12 inches tall). Is there something I should spray around them?

Expert Response

Carolyn,

If you are concerned about the grasshoppers damaging your chokecherries, please check out the attached fact sheet: 5536 for grasshopper control in gardens and small acreage. If you would like to know even more about insects that feed on trees and shrubs, please look through the other attached document. Grasshopper specific information begins on page 39. Both references are authored by Dr. Whitney Cranshaw.

If you have more specific questions, please call our Extension Office at<personal data hidden>. We have certified Master Gardener volunteers on staff Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1-4:30 p.m.

Many thanks,

Kali
