Is it safe to plant my garden after sewage work? #869381

Asked May 20, 2024, 10:48 PM EDT

On May 8th, 2024 I had my sewer line replaced which ran along the center of my garden. Now that it has been backfilled for about 2 weeks, when I dig a few inches deep I can smell the remnants of sewage. Is it safe for me to continue planting my garden? How long do I need to wait before I resume planting for the season and what can I do to ensure my soil is safe for planting?

Allegheny County Pennsylvania

Expert Response

Additionally, would it be safe to do raised garden beds this year instead, and if so, can I place them over the soil that smells? The biggest issue is our garden fence is already up and can’t be moved and over half the garden was dug up for the sewage work.

You may want to double check (scope) the sewer line to ensure you do not have any leaks, even after repair.  sometimes with settling after re-fill of the trench you may have an issue.  Yes raised beds or even elevated box gardens may prove a safety factor for you.
