Dwarf Alberta Spruce Sun and Watering #869356

Asked May 20, 2024, 7:07 PM EDT

I have recently planted a Dwarf Alberta Spruce in a large pot.
The tree receives full sun on the East side through the morning. In the early afternoon, as the sun moves West, my house blocks the sun from the tree. The tree gets very little direct sunlight on its West side.
Do you think that the tree gets adequate sunlight this way?
If not, would it make sense to rotate the tree periodically, so that each side gets the morning sun?
And if that sounds like a useful approach, how often should I rotate the tree? I'm also uncertain about how much water the tree needs. I have read that the tree "doesn't like wet roots" and that over-watering is a possible concern. I would appreciate any watering advice that you can give me.  Thank you

Hi Robert,

Apologies for the delay in response!

A lot of the Dwarf Alberta's I have seen planted next to a structure (whether it is the house, shed or a wood fence) typically overtime will become barren on the side facing the structure, so you have a valid question! It would be a great idea to roatate your tree since it is in a pot and you are able to do it. I would think rotating it 1/4 turn once per month would be sufficient.

For the watering you are correct, it likes well drained soil, so as long as your pot drainage works well, then you should be fine. It is better to water infrequently, but deeply rathar than watering it a little bit everyday. Water it well, and then wait until the soil is dry before watering it deeply again. Remember to water it throughout the winter months as well when temps are above 40 degrees!
