Leaves on new grape plants #869317

Asked May 20, 2024, 4:21 PM EDT

Hello, we bought 4 potted grape plants at the MN Landscape Arboretum plant sale last weekend - 2 Edelweiss and 2 Sabrevois. The new, small leaves have a white powderlike coating on the top and bottom of the leaf. The larger leaves have it on the bottom. The green stems have a bit, too. Is this powdery or downy mildew? Anything I need to know about treating such a young plant? Thanks!

Good Morning Chelsey,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Here is a link to growing grapes in the home garden from the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website: https://extension.umn.edu/fruit/growing-grapes-home-garden#diseases-and-other-challenges-986261

If you scroll down, there is information about powdery and downy mildew.

Here is a link to the MN Grape Growers Assoc about growing grapes: https://www.mngrapes.org/page/GrowingGrapes

I am attaching a document from the Canadian gov about powdery mildew.

Good Luck!
