There was a lot of damage this winter to landscape and fruit trees. The break point on this particular trunk is in a location that will collect moisture and lead to further decay and rot. Based on the location, it would be best to prune this trunk below the damage to where there is no longer a split (cracking damage that could let in water). One of the branches below this point can then be trained to become a replacement. I hope this makes sense. Also, the application of dressing or pastes to tree wounds is no longer recommended. Please see the link here for great information for how to care for damaged trees. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/forestry/publications/PDF_files/SUL-6.pdf
I hope this helps.
