3rd blue spruce in a row to die in same spot #869275

Asked May 20, 2024, 1:55 PM EDT

Hello, Over the past 5 years, I've planted a 4' blue spruce in the same spot and each one has died by the late fall. I plant them in spring. I add root stimulator and appropriate fertilizer when I plant them. They are good quality trees from Costco. I'm an experienced grower and have successfully planted a number of trees on my Golden Valley property. This spot gets full sun and I make sure the soil is properly watered. We want a blue spruce near that spot. I have 3 mature blue spruces' close by. One is within 8 feet of the spot. I just dug up the dead (near dead) spruce and I collected soil from 3 spots within 1" outside the hole. I intend to have it analyzed but I want to get your opinion first. Also, can you recommend a good place to get the soil analyzed? Thank you

Thanks for the question. That tree is still alive though in very tough shape. You can have a soil sample tested at the University of MN. Here is a link: https://extension.umn.edu/managing-soil-and-nutrients/soil-testing-lawns-and-gardens

I cannot determine what the cause is from the photo. There are a number of things that could cause this damage. Drought weather (under watering especially in sandy soil). Lack of moisture going into winter. Over watering especially in heavy/clay soil. Dry winter weather or desiccating wind. Exposure to road salt. Fertilizer can cause excessive tender grow, which may not harden off before winter.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck!
