Pin oak leaf damage #869271

Asked May 20, 2024, 1:48 PM EDT

I recently noticed one of our pin oaks dropping leaves that looked like they have been singed by fire. I have done a Google search, but can't find anything to identify what this may be. The branches, bark, etc. all look healthy. We have several other pin oak trees, and I have not noted damage on the others, but worried that if one has it, others may get it. I would like someone's idea on what it could be before I hit the panic button and call in an arborist. Thanks! I have attached pictures of the problem.

Hi there,

There are a number of problems that can plague oak trees: Oak wilt and bacterial leaf scorch are two of them.
I am sending you links that describe various problems and you can see which most closely resembles what is affecting your tree.
From Penn State: Bacterial Leaf Scorch (psu.edu)
The University of Maryland has photos of a number of diseases:

And finally, another fact sheet from the University of Kentucky:
ppfs-or-w-12.pdf (uky.edu)

You referred to hitting the panic button by calling an arborist.  I'd look at calling an arborist as protecting your investment, especially since you have others that are showing similar signs.  This is a link from the International Society of Arboriculture to find a certified arborist who can offer you a more informed diagnosis:

Best of luck.
