branch on a river birch tree #869262

Asked May 20, 2024, 1:32 PM EDT

We have a river birch tree in our front yard with a large somewhat horizontally-extending branch over the driveway. This branch actually begins at the ground level but at a 12-15 foot elevation it extends more horizontally out. It's beautiful but I'm afraid it could snap off in a storm. Can something be done to brace or support this large branch? Thank you very much.

Hello,

thank you for contacting Ask Extension. If you could send pictures of the tree, and also a picture of how it extends over the driveway, that would help. I have to be able to see the problem before giving you advice. If you could send the pictures so that are less than 8mb.

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension. After looking at your tree in the picture provided, It appears that your tree is in good condition. You want to have all trunks and branches be less than 90°, and better if it is less than 60°, which means nothing straight out from the tree that is horizontal to the tree itself.  I believe the one that you are concerned with (above your driveway) is just a bit less than the 90°. To be on the safe side, you might want to consider removing that limb. I am including a reference for you to contact an arborist. https://www.arborday.org/trees/health/arborist.cfm
