Uneven Sodded Lawn #869225

Asked May 20, 2024, 11:06 AM EDT

I have a sodded lawn that was supposed to be rolled shortly after install but heavy rains made it too wet to roll. They never came back after the water receded and in fact it became too dry to roll. Now with watering and some beneficial rains the sod has become rooted and I've read that rolling the lawn now would be harmful. The lawn is difficult to both mow and walk on and making it a safety issue. What would be the prescribed method to fix the lawn at this stage?

Hi,
You can roll the lawn anytime, but it is best when the ground is a little moist. But, an alternative method is to top-dress the lawn with compost. This process will fill in any low areas and level the lawn nicely, plus add some nutrients and organic matter. There are many really nice YouTube videos on this process from start to finish and what you can expect. There are two ways to go about it. You can rent a professional gas-powered topdresser if you have a large area or you can buy a push drum version. These can be bought on amazon. Simply search "compost spreader".
You could also do it by hand if you like, but it is very labor intensive.
