Dear Bradley:

Thank you for contacting the El Paso County Colorado Master Gardeners' Help Desk regarding juniper identification. The Upright Juniper in particular is a great evergreen tree for water-wise landscaping in the Colorado Springs area. Unfortunately, with more than 170 species and cultivars of juniper in the nursery trade, it is not possible to identify the exact cultivar based on your photo alone. If you would like to bring a sample of the tree by our in-person help desk at 17 North Spruce Street in Colorado Springs (open 9-12 and 1-4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays) and provide us with a bit more information, we would be happy to attempt further identification.

Attached is a list of recommended trees for the Front Range. On Page 8, you can see that Juniperus chinensis "Blue Point" is recommended for most sites, and Juniperus chinensis cultivars "Spearmint," "Spartan," and "Hetzi Columnaris" are simply recommended for the Front Range. I recommend contacting local nurseries in Colorado Springs for availability.

Please contact us at <personal data hidden>,<personal data hidden>, or in person (above) if we can assist you further. Best wishes, and happy gardening!

Thanks.  Here's some photos of the plant.  It's been suggested that the trunk exposure on this plant is due to pruning but I don't think that's the case.  People buy these plants because they're care-free and there's no reason to go to the extra trouble of pruning them in order to expose the trunk.  The trunks are exposed because that's the way the plant grows.  There are lots of these in yards but I can't find them in plant stores.  It might help to know the exact name.

If you bring us large enough of a sample we will be able to narrow down the species using the tools (and expertise) in the office.
