Blackberries disease #869096

Asked May 19, 2024, 12:43 PM EDT

I received 10 Triple Crown Blackberry bare roots. Planted in planters and each plant was growing new leaves and looked healthy. However, after about 3 months some of the plants leaves starting browning. Planted into ground about 3 weeks ago hoping this would help but all the plants seen to have some fading/silvering/browning than dying leaves. I would like to know what is causing this. If there is a treatment, or if I need to remove them due to potential spreading to other fruit plant?

Expert Response

The fading color, necrotic patches and marginal reddening of leaves is typical of sunburn. We had some very abrupt hot and sunny weather a few weeks ago. Recent transplants are susceptible to sunburn like this especially if they go from greenhouse or shade into direct sun. To prevent this in the future you can use a white shade cloth until the plants are adapted to the new conditions. For now, I think the growing points should be ok and there is nothing you can do other than take good care of them watering as needed this summer.
