Tricyclopyr in oak woodland #869089

Asked May 19, 2024, 11:29 AM EDT

I would like to use a cut-stump application of tricyclopyr to control poison oak in a white oak woodland environment. The poison oak is extensive, but I will only be painting cut stems, not spraying leaves. Could the herbicide degrading from the roots of the Toxicodendron damage the mature oaks, a nearby stream, or other important parts of the ecosystem?

Expert Response

Tricyclopyr is a herbicide that is not subject to the passive loss of herbicide from treated roots to the soil. In this case the herbicide should stay in the roots of the poison oak and not enter the soil around the plants causing potential side effects.
