Early blooming plant #869083

Asked May 19, 2024, 9:54 AM EDT

Can you identify this plant? I planted little bulbs I got from someone who lives on a street where I often walk. I like that they bloom early like crocus, but it also spreads rapidly through seeds. Is this possibly an undesirable plant or invasive species? The photo is from earlier this year.

Expert Response

Yes, unfortunately the plant is lesser celandine, Ranunculus ficaria.  It is considered an invasive plant and I would recommend removing it.  You can read more about it here, https://www.oregon.gov/oda/shared/Documents/Publications/Weeds/LesserCelandineProfile.pdf and https://wmswcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/LesserCelandine-WEB.pdf
