Concern with our Weeping Mulberry (fruitless) #869067

Asked May 18, 2024, 8:56 PM EDT

I have a question about our Weeping Mulberry tree. It seems very thin with leaves and I noticed little fussy worm looking things that are dropping off the tree. We have had this tree for approximately 10 years and do not remember these fuzzys dropping. I did spray the tree earlier in the spring with Gertens Ferti-Lome fungicide, something I have done for several years due to leaves getting holes in them from some type of bug. Never had an issue. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I attached some pictures for your review. Thank you always for you help Scott J Greer

Expert Response

Hi Scott,

Your tree is flowering. See here:

Has your tree ever been pruned? It should be done in spring. It's late to do that now, but here's a good guide:

https://www.johnson.k-state.edu/docs/lawn-and-garden/in-house-publications/garden-maintenance/Pruning%20Weeping%20Trees%20and%20Shrubs.pdf

If you're uncomfortable doing this, hire a certified arborist. You can find one here:

Also, if we have another drought (which seems unlikely now, but it could happen), make sure the tree is watered.

Hope this helps!
