Tying back colchicum? #869064

Asked May 18, 2024, 8:37 PM EDT

My colchicum leaves are 1 1/2 to 2 ft tall. They seem to get bigger every year. Not brown yet. Can I tie them back now? Probably not cut hem, right? They are blocking the sun from other plantings. Thank you.

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting us regarding your question about colchicums.  The foliage in the spring can reach to 14 inches, and just like daffodils,  is unsightly. The foliage is needed for the  corm to get nutrients and energy.   It  is best to leave it alone.  Mixing with plants that can camouflage is best solution.  Here is some additional information: https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/autumn-crocus-colchicum-spp/
