Is this plant a weed, and what to do with it #869048

Asked May 18, 2024, 6:09 PM EDT

I moved into a new house, and the backyard along the fence line is covered with these, and I have not been able to determine what they are. They grow straight up in clusters, and have a large root ball with thin, hair-like roots.

Expert Response

The plants are Motherwort.  You do want to remove this weed.  We recommend that you wear long sleeves and gloves when doing so as it can cause an uncomfortable rash. https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/motherwort
