Lattarula goes to Florence Oregon #869012

Asked May 18, 2024, 12:13 PM EDT

I would like to grow a Lattarula fig tree in a 25 gal. nursery pot in a south-facing, wind-sheltered nook on my patio located about 300 yds from the Siuslaw River/Pacific Ocean in Florence, Oregon. What do you think my chances of success are?

Lane County Oregon

Expert Response

I don't think your chances of producing fruit are very good because the temperatures at your location probably won't be warm enough for long enough in the summer.

Here is an article from Oregon State Extension discussing growing fig trees in Western Oregon.   It doesn't recommend growing figs on the Oregon Coast due to cooler summer temperatures - https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/dont-be-fooled-figs-grow-fine-western-oregon

That said, gardening is always an experiment.  You could certainly try growing a fig tree.  Maybe your summer microclimate will be just warm enough!

Thanks for the warning, Bill. Of course, I'm going to TRY and get fruit by planting in a warm, sheltered corner...
