Pest control for container planters #868995

Asked May 18, 2024, 10:18 AM EDT

I have 3 large 6'X2' elevated planters (By-the-Yard) on my deck. There is full sun on our 3rd story deck and lots of wind. Last year the annuals were plagued with a variety of pests, including Japanese beetles, spider mite, etc. The plants included cordyline, calibrachoa, bacopa, bronze leaf begonia. I sprayed Neem Oil on them starting mid-summer with questionable effect. Before I plant annuals this year, should the soil in the planter be treated with some type of chemical(s)? What can I do to minimize the infestations this year? There's very good drainage in the planters. Thanks.

Expert Response

Start by replacing all the soil to prevent any overwintering pests.  Heat stressed plants are more likely to contract disease.  Windy days cause even more transpiration/water loss.  And reflection from windows and walls increases heat and water needs. So watering plants on decks in full sun can require twice daily watering. It  might help slow down water loss by using a shade cloth for the hottest part of the day.
Finally inspect plants daily for pests, especially under leaves.  Early detection is important.  If you find any pests take a closeup picture with a coin and send the picture to us. We can then give you good advice on control of that pest.  There is no “one size fits all”, only early detection, when it comes to pest solutions.
