Dual trunk young serviceberry. #868956

Asked May 17, 2024, 7:32 PM EDT

I have a serviceberry with a dual trunk. I am wondering if I should remove the smaller trunk? If I should remove the second trunk, would I be able to air-layer it to make a second serviceberry? Or should I wait until winter dormancy to trim? Thank you!

Expert Response

You don't need to remove the double trunk. It is one of the ways this native tree naturally grows.
We would suggest giving it a ring of mulch- only about 2-3 inches deep and kept pulled back from the trunks, which will allow the soil/root area to stay cool and moist while protecting it from errant string trimmers and mowers.
If the second trunk bothers you, you can cut one off.
