rose rosette disease on two of my roses #868954

Asked May 17, 2024, 7:25 PM EDT

Parts of two adjoining roses out of my total of 72 had areas of quite abnormal growth that i pruned out yesrerday. Today I fished some out of mixed organics long enough to take a photo, which is attached. The two stems are from roses of very different sizes. Is this rose rosette virus? If not, what could it be? If it is, is my only recourse, the careful and hygienic entire removal of both roses?

Expert Response

Thanks for sharing a photo—it's very helpful. This looks like accidental herbicide damage, not rose rosette. Have you done any spraying this season?

Take a look at the photos of rose rosette here. Note the excessive thorns and swollen stems that are not present in your photo.
