adding clover to what was previously only grass #868928

Asked May 17, 2024, 3:39 PM EDT

The area I am trying to cover ranges from almost full sun to almost full shade. I have overseeded it and am keeping it moist. I have added a little compost on top to help retain moisture and add some nutrients. I like the clover, but need to find something that will thrive in the bare patches. Preferably something native, (but not necessarily). Something fairly drought tolerant. Something that has a fairly good chance of succeeding. Any advice regarding good choice plants/ planting advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated! I'm including some photos.

Hello Steve, happy to help.

If the partial shade area can get up to four hours of sun per day (when it's sunny), then clover would be a good choice in that spot. If not, you might think about some sort of  partial shade loving plant like wild ginger (you never have to cut it but it may take over the sparsely grassed area and in the thickly grassed area, simply mowing it will keep the ginger at bay) or vinca minor (less invasive than ginger but it will definitely take over the sparsely grassed area). Both of these plants will maintain a low profile so there's no need to mow them.

Good-luck!
