Insect identification (found in Canton MI) #868921

Asked May 17, 2024, 3:06 PM EDT

What kind of bug is this? Is it invasive? I’ve never seen one before. Found while cutting some nuisance trees and trimming shrubs. Body and head (not including legs) is about 1/2 to 3/4” long. I saw several of them, not a swarm or anything.

Expert Response

This is a longhorned beetle. Their are eggs are laid within the trunk or stems of shrubs, and the larvae bore within. We have multiple species that are native to Michigan. This one is in the genus Strangalia, but I'm not sure of the species from the photo.
