Cryptomeria #868916

Asked May 17, 2024, 2:50 PM EDT

I recently removed a few dead trees and would like to plant Cryptomeria in that area, which has the least amount of issues, the Yoshino or the Radicans?

Expert Response

We are not aware of a significant difference between those two cultivars. Cryptomeria in general does not have a lot of issues (infectious disease or pest-related), and to our knowledge, no Cryptomeria cultivar is any more or less susceptible to any of them as long as its cultivation needs are met. (Full sun to mostly-sunny exposure and well-drained soil.) Be aware that, like any  plant of enough height, they may be vulnerable to damage if they are planted in an area visited by deer. (While deer do not prefer to browse Cryptomeria in general, curious deer might nibble foliage, especially if very hungry in winter. The bigger threat, though, is main trunk scraping injury by bucks in autumn, when they are rubbing velvet off of their antlers. Bark can be wounded and branches broken off in that situation, which can cause significant damage.)
