Cicadas? #868894

Asked May 17, 2024, 1:08 PM EDT

Hi, We live in Rockville, i.e. Montgomery County, and have some young trees. Do we need to worry about netting them to protect them from the cicadas? Initially we were advised to do so but every article I’ve seen only talks about a small slice of Maryland being affected by the cicadas- in St. Mary’s County. Thanks for your help.

Expert Response

Only a portion of St. Mary's County has some of the periodical cicada brood that is emerging this year; the rest of Maryland will not experience a mass emergence. While a very, very small number (not enough to be noticeable) of periodical cicadas from other broods that have already come and gone might emerge any given year (called "stragglers," because they are emerging out of sync), they are so few in number that they can be ignored, and predators will likely pick most of them off. No tree protection is needed this year for most Marylanders, or until about the year 2030 or 2038.
