Question on How Much Fertilizer to Use #868893

Asked May 17, 2024, 1:07 PM EDT

Hi, I received my UMN soil test results for my home in Minnetonka. My report number is 90156 and my lab numbers are 176604, 176605, and 176606. The recommended NPK for fertilizer I received were 1-0-2, 1-1-2, and 1-0-1. Based on my understanding, a fertilizer with a ratio of 1-0-1 may be best so I don't exceed any of the ratios. The area of my home that has grass is about 6,000 sq ft. and I want to fertilize three times. If I understand my report correctly, I should use 1/3 of the recommended ratio for each application. Does that mean that I should use enough of a 1-0-1 fertilizer that would cover only 2,000 sq ft? That is where my confusion is.

These questions are assigned by computer to Extension Master Gardeners all over the state and I do not have access to your test reports.
You had three tests done from three different areas of your lawn? I don't understand the "use 1/3 each time" reference. Your best bet is to call the soil test lab and ask for clarification.

They have telephone numbers, an email address and additional articles explaining how to read soil test reports.
Yes Stevwe, go ahead.

Yes go ahead. I always want to learn more, especially how to reply to internal alerts. Linda

Thanks for your recent question.

In cooperation with the Master Gardener who previously communicated with you, I would like to explore your particular situation a bit more.  In order for me to best help you, I need to look at the actual soil report.  Might you be so kind to send me a picture of the front page of the report?  If you have several reports, please send me the front pages of each report.

I look forward to working further with you.  Thanks for consulting us.
