climbing vines that grow in shade #868866

Asked May 17, 2024, 11:53 AM EDT

Hi, I'd like to plant some vines/ivy that will grow up a chain link fence and provide some privacy through the whole year. Are there any plants you can suggest that will grow in a very shady area? Ideally, I'd like the leaves to stay all year, but if the vines grow think enough to provide a screen, that will be okay.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for your question.  Like you, I would prefer a natural option for privacy rather than a structure.  As I was doing research to find the plant(s) that would fit your need I did find many options from Southern states that, I believe, would find it difficult to survive the winter in the North.  I am attaching an article that will give you some suggestions for your project that may adapt well for our region.  It looks like some are thicker than others but there are descriptions of some lovely options.  After you study this file and play with your vision for this space I would suggest going to a local comprehensive garden store that sells landscape plants and ask what might work best in your area.  I hope this works out for you to your satisfaction!

Hello Mary:

Dan has given you a great resource regarding your question.

I also wanted to include the following:

Before selecting what you want to plant, please refer to the VT Invasive website to be sure what you select is not invasive in Vermont (such as the Bittersweet that is referred to in the article he sent you).

We also have a Landscape Plants for Vermont book that provides info. on Native to Vermont climbers that I think you would find helpful.

You may also want to consider getting your soil tested for the area where you wish to plant.

I hope this additional info. is helpful!
