Grass type #868863

Asked May 17, 2024, 11:49 AM EDT

First what type of grass is in the picture? My lawn is mixed with this and tall fescue. In the picture you will see parts are turning brown, including the tips, which in some cases can be from a dull blade. My mower blade was sharpened prior to the start of the cutting season. None of the tall fescue blades are showing any signs of brown discoloration. Is this a fungus from the wet spring?

Expert Response

We are unable to ID the turfgrass in the photo; not enough distinguishing features and fine details are visible, especially with mown grass. If you would like to try to determine what grass it is, you can use the key and descriptions in the links below to narrow-down the possibilities. Illustrations of what the structures or features look like (ligule, vernation, auricles, collar, etc.) that are needed for comparison are included in each page. Fungal infection is certainly possible, yes, given our wet and humid/foggy weather recently, but we can't tell from the image which pathogen (if any) is responsible. You can use the information on the Lawn Diseases pages, plus our Diagnose Lawn Problems page, to try to narrow it down. Visible mycelium (fungal threads that are sometimes visible outside of the infected plants when conditions are wet or very humid) will help narrow-down which fungus may be present since some have different colors (gray-white vs. pink, for example).
